Notify DWR of Monitoring Date
All VA SOS monitors are permitted by the state to carry out stream monitoring through the Izaak Walton League’s scientific collection permit. Certified monitors are added as sub-permitees and are required to carry a printed copy of this permit with them at every monitoring session.
Permit updates will be sent to the VA SOS network through the monthly newsletter. Please email vasos@iwla.org if you need to be re-sent the permit or if you do not currently receive the newsletter.
In accordance with this permit, VA SOS monitors must also notify the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources at least 48 hours before a monitoring session. DWR tracks stream sampling efforts from multiple agencies, groups, and research institutions, and ensures that streams are not oversampled. They also may advise against monitoring due to invasive species issues, spawning events, or health concerns. To notify DWR, send an email to CollectionPermits@dwr.virginia.gov with the site station ID, stream name, county, and anticipated sampling date.
